The Juvéderm XC® Filler Family: Ultra, Ultra Plus, Voluma®, Volbella®, Vollure® and Volux®
The Juvederm® filler family includes the most popular injectable esthetic fillers in the world. They correct wrinkles, lines, and scars, lift sagging skin, contour and restore youthful volume, and enhance features.

Differences Between the Juvederm Family Members
Juvederm now comes in multiple types, each customized to achieve different effects. The XC in the name signifies that it contains anesthetic.
The thicker versions lift and contour sagging facial areas. Mid-range thickness products fill deep lines and wrinkles, restore volume, and enhance features. The thinner types fill fine lines and wrinkles.
In Dr. Elliott’s opinion, these are the preferred areas and goals for each type of Juvederm:
Juverm type | Best for: | Can also use for: | Not for: |
Voluma | Lifting, contouring, adding volume, nasolabial folds and marionette lines | Filling deeper wrinkles, nasal bump correction | Lips, lip lines, superficial lines |
Volbella | Lip lines, under eye depressions, crow’s feet, |
Subtle lip enhancement | Lifting, contouring or adding significant volume |
Vollure | Contouring, filling wrinkles, restoring volume | Less subtle lip augmentation | Enhancing cheekbones, chin or jawline |
Volux | Augmenting jawline & chin | Augmenting cheeks, correct nasal bump | General volume, wrinkle correction, lips, under eyes |
Ultra Plus | Filling wrinkles, enhancing lips, volumizing without lifting | Cheek hollows, marionette lines, nasolabial folds | Under-eye depressions, noses, brow lifts |
Ultra | Superficial etched lines, lips, cheek hollows | Forehead, frown & neck lines | Under-eye depressions, noses, brow lifts |
Details About Each Type Of Juvederm
Juvederm Ultra® and Ultra Plus® are the original Juvederm products and both attract and bind water, which can be an advantage in certain areas. Juvederm Ultra’s consistency is thinner than that of Ultra Plus so it’s best for fine surface lines and subtle lip enhancement. Ultra Plus has a thicker consistency and it’s used for filling deeper lines, augmenting lips, and adding volume. Results of Ultra and Ultra Plus last an average of about twelve months.
The Juvederm Vycross™ products all start with the letter “V”, standing for Vycross™ cross-linking. The Vycross method produces gels whose results tend to last longer, lift better and, because they absorb less water, tend to cause less swelling.
Juvederm Volbella® is the thinnest of the Vycross products and in our opinion, is the best choice for filling superficial lines like those around the lips or crow’s feet. Results with Volbella last about a year.
Juvederm Vollure® is a moderately thick filler, excellent for lip augmentation, filling deeper lines, and adding volume. Vollure’s results last an average of twelve to eighteen months.
Juvederm Voluma® is a firmer (yet soft to the touch) gel than any of the above choices and is used to lift slightly sagging areas or add volume to areas that lie over bone (cheekbones, chin, brows, for example). The effects of Voluma can be compared to using a center pole to lift a large tent. When the pole is placed on a hard surface, it can lift the entire tent. The results from Voluma usually last up to two years.

Juvederm Volux® is the newest Vycross product and is the only filler approved for enhancing jawline definition. Because it’s so robust, it simulates the appearance of bone and lasts roughly 1 1/2 years.
What Is a Juvéderm XC™ Treatment Like?
The treatment takes only minutes to perform and the results are immediate. Juvéderm®XC products contain anesthetic so the treatments are virtually painless and the results are seen immediately. There’s usually little swelling and many of our patients pop in during their lunch hour and go right back to work.
Because hyaluronic acid is naturally found in the body, there is almost no risk of an allergic reaction. Bruising can occur with any injection, so treatments should be scheduled when you don’t have a social event within the following week.
How long do the results of Juvederm last?
The duration of Juvederm filler results depends on the type of Juvederm used, the area where it’s placed & whether the area has been treated before.
With all injectable dermal fillers, the results from subsequent treatments tend to last longer than with the first, probably because of their collagen-stimulating properties.
